GENERAL MOTORS

Artist's Statement

General Motors is an American multinational automotive manufacturing company from Detroit, Michigan, and it is the largest automaker in the US. In 2021 they recently redesigned their logo to better reflect their focus on their electric vehicles.

My redesign focussed on future options for GM that could be used on concept electric or motored vehicles. There are new concept identity logo options and mock-ups for the initial G, initials GM, abreviated GEN, and General Motors over/under and side by side.

To make the custom designed characters, the letter G from the typeface FZ BASIC 53 EX was chosen. It serves as the model for all of the other characters in the General Motors set. Once the G was selected, it was sliced diagonally into 10 equal parts. This made a total of 16 diferent shapes to make subtractions from. Remaining shapes were then merged together into the final 13 letters in General Motors.

The characters are encased in the same thickness curved square border as the 2021 logo redesign. Each of the characters themselves have a balanced amount of hard and curved edges and number of parts. The same two tone blue gradient was used as in the 2021 logo redesign. The overall aesthetic is futureistic and out of this world.
